This week, approximately 200 of our students participated in the Hour of Code. The Hour of Code is a really exciting, international initiative that was developed by Code.org in order to get more students interested in the fields of coding and computer programming.
Within our school, 3rd thru 5th grade students completed at least one hour of code using the Light Bot app. The Light Bot app. is a great way to introduce the basic principles of coding. Through the app. students must program a robot to light up a blue tile. The robot must move forward, rotate or jump in order to get to the blue tile that needs to be lit.

Through coding, students were able to rely on their independence, interdependence, and collaboration skills, which in turn, has increased their confidence in problem solving. Confidence in problem solving is essential in the development of all learners, as it requires students to work through a series of processes in order to attain the desired results. Think, mathematics. In addition, programming the virtual robot, requires students to utilize a common skill that is found in reading and language arts curriculum. Point of View. Students put themselves in the shoes of the robot in order to determine what step(s) it must take in order to light up the blue tile.
